Werner Vogels, CTO and VP, Amazon.com
While Werner Vogels and I have become friends over the past few years, often bumping into each other backstage at a wide variety of events, this is the very first one-on-one session we produced together.
Shot at an AWS event in Utrecht, Netherlands, I knew the Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Amazon.com was going to be speaking, and as it wasn’t one of these overly huge events, I got to work finding a plain white wall and set up two speed lights to achieve this shot.
Now, Werner and I had cross paths previously, but I never had the opportunity (or reason for that matter) to strike up a conversation with him. But I’d be damned if I didn’t get him this time. So without much thought, the minute I saw him sitting alone in a lounge, I put all my humility to one side, boldly approached him, and asked for the shot.
For a guy with probably more than a few things on his mind, and an inbox that I can only imagine, Dr. Vogels is one of the most down to earth, sure thing, can do, people you’d ever want to meet. He probably had a few emails from Bezos that he was reading, but this photographer just asked for a few minutes of his time. Now THAT is the stuff that people remember. Not the talk you gave about XYZ, not the services that AWS has to offer (ok, probably a few of the things that AWS does), but how you treat them. How you make them feel.
And for me, and I hope for Werner, for those few minutes we spent together getting this shot, we discussed DJing, his daughters’ acting and singing careers, photography (check out his insta – impressive shit), and just how lovely a city Seattle is to live in.
… and I believe the result speaks for itself.
Thanks Werner … looking forward to crossing paths again soon.
Enjoy, and if you’d like to work with me, get in touch!
