Tom Fletcher Portrait

Date September 22, 2015
When I covered the BDL Accelerate event in Beirut, Lebanon last November, one of the keynote speakers was the British Ambassador to Lebanon, Tom Fletcher, CMG.

Direct from Wikipedia, “Fletcher joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1997. He served at Nairobi between 1998 and 2002, as Private Secretary to Ministers at the FCO from 2002 to 2004, in Paris between 2004 and 2007, and as the Prime Minister’s Private Secretary for Foreign Affairs and adviser on Northern Ireland from 2007 to 2011. In 2010, he was also the Prime Minister’s foreign policy adviser. On leaving the Prime Minister’s office he was made CMG in the New Year Honours of 2011.

He was appointed Ambassador to Lebanon in 2011, and left the role in 2015.”

Knowing that I had very little time for this dignitary, I politely introduced myself, and asked him if he had a few minutes to do a portrait with me. This was the first and only time that I’ve ever had a security detail ask to see the gear I would be using and to produce a few pictures before they’d let him go anywhere near it. Fair enough.

As it turned out, Mr. Fletcher was an absolute star to photograph, and I’m pretty sure he walked away with a big smile on his face. I sent him the image after the event, and I’m proud to say that the image we produced together now graces his Twitter account.

And just in case this didn’t make your radar, Tom’s farewell to Lebanon blog post is absolutely epic, and a must read for just about anyone consuming oxygen.
