Maye Musk, MS RDN, is described as, “a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with two MS degrees, who now focuses her career on wellness presentations to obtain and/or maintain good health.” And if that wasn’t impressive enough, she’s also a professional model who’s been in front of the camera for over five decades. Clearly a testament to her timeless beauty.
Maye is a grandmother of 10 via her children of Kimbal, Tosca, and Elon Musk, and at age 70, doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.
And she’s an incredibly gracious and warm and welcoming woman.
I first spotted Maye at the Speakers reception as part of the Brilliant Minds event I was covering. It’s always a tricky balance when photographing events like this. I want to get the shot, but I also don’t want to intrude on any conversations that are taking place. Reading the room and timing are key.
I did the subtle circling of the group, and when I didn’t get any eye contact, carried on shooting other details, individuals, etc. On a second pass, I could see that the conversation was at a reasonable point to make myself seen. Catching Maye’s eye, I smiled and approached her.
She knew what was coming, and opening the conversation with, “I bet I know what you want.”
“Well, I would never presume, but yes, shall we collaborate?” I answered.
“It’s almost as if they put this perfectly white wall here just for us,” Maye answered.
With this comment, I immediately knew that she was very much aware of what makes for a great image. I rattled off some settings, asking her if this sounded right (with a huge smile, of course). She answered, “You know, I know a lot of models who became very interested in what the camera is doing, and have become fantastic photographers in their own right, but for me, I was never very much interested in it.”
In addition to this image, we produced a few more the next day, and having established prior contact with Maye, it was much easier to ask her for another shot backstage. I even was cheeky enough to phrase it in a way whereby she pulled Kimbal over to me for an image. Because, you know, when Mom asks, you don’t say no.
A true lady, it was an incredibly rewarding experience to collaborate with such an inspiring individual.
