Working on headshots and portraits is always a special project for me. Celebrities, Royalty, Business Leaders, future Rock Stars, you name it. To me, what the person does for a living doesn’t really matter. What DOES matter is how we work together; and how we can deliver an image that both presents this person in the best possible light, and when the
In this regard, I especially enjoy working with other photographers. There’s just something special about two individuals who are passionate about beautiful imagery, AND have a technical understanding of what’s happening. So you can imagine my jaw hitting the floor when I saw that one of the speakers at Symposium’s Brilliant Minds event was none other than Mary McCartney.
I’ve casually studied Mary’s works for a few years now, and have always been fascinated by her attention to details. whether it’s the forgotten balloons hovering around the ceiling, or the silhouette of the guitars backstage, her style echoes very close to what I strive to achieve – noticing the unnoticed.
Listening to her talk at Symposium, I’m not afraid to admit, a tear welled in my eye, as I was in the same room, listening to an artist who’s work has had a great impact on me. Wow.
So needless to say, when Mary exited stage right, I was there and waiting, ready to get to work. Incredibly approachable, I politely asked if she had a few minutes, and without hesitation, she answered, “Yes, of course. Where shall we go?”
I had a compact studio setup next to the hair and makeup area, and once she saw the flash setup, Mary instantly hit her mark and commented, “So this is your key and this is the highlight?” Boom! This, for example, is why I love working with other photographers. I then countered with, “Hmmm … ISO 200, f/1.2, at … 125th of a second?” She smiled and said, “Mmmm … sounds about right, let’s see what we’ve got.”
Mary and I produced a few images together, all the while having a conversation in the midst of things. We talked about different cameras and lighting setups. And while she’s not a professional model, Mary has clearly worked with some of the best in the industry, for as we were talking, she hit pose after pose after pose.
An honour I’ll never forget. Mary, Natalia, Ben, and the entire Symposium team, thank you for making a dream a reality.
Enjoy, and if you’d like to work with me, get in touch!
