Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway
I first met HRH Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway at a Startup Extreme event a few years back. Heavily involved in the startup ecosystem, Haakon regularly makes appearances at related events in Norway and the Nordics. As heir apparent to the throne of Norway, Haakon can certainly pick and choose as to where and how he dedicates his time, and in addition to HRH The Duke of York, I find it quite interesting, refreshing, and inspiring that these royal figures recognize and support the future, e.g. startups.
I captured this image of Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway at Slush in Helsinki, Finland, this past December. In many ways, I believe it was our first meeting in Bergen that made this shot possible. I’m fairly certain he didn’t recall my name (fair enough, the man must meet a million people a year), but there was a recognition in his eye. The, “Oh this guy. I’ve seen him before.” And therefor, the Crown Prince felt at ease with me and my camera(s) around.
For this image, and an expression that I’ve never seen on him before, he was sitting on a stool next to a table and making himself comfortable before engaging in a press conference. While all the other photographers were setting up, I was already ready to go, and shot around 25-30 shots before this one. Likewise, while they all clamored to get the “head on” shot, whenever I see a pack of photographers, my first move is to take a step to the left or the right. Why get the same shot that 15 other photographers are going to get?
And thus, this image of Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway.
