In the past 2 months I’ve had the amazing opportunity to meet and photograph two of my professional heroes, Benjamin Von Wong, and Chase Jarvis. Both of these guys are true inspiration. And in addition to both being phenomenal artists, perhaps more so, they’re both incredible businessmen and marketers.
A bit about Chase (from Wikipedia):
Chase Jarvis is an award-winning American photographer, director, artist, and entrepreneur. Since April 2014, Jarvis has been the chief executive officer of CreativeLive, an online education platform that he co-founded in 2010.
I knew Chase would be at the speakers dinner at The Next Web conference in Amsterdam, and thus, made sure I had a nice light diffuser with me. In this case, a Orbis Ring flash. I don’t oven use this diffuser, but it’s a fun one with a unique look, aaaaaand … doesn’t take up too much room in the suitcase and/or sidebag for a night out on a shoot.
Funny thing is, I spotted Chase within minutes of walking in the room, and I’m pretty sure he did the same. I walked over and introduced myself and he immediately said, “Hey, one of my people!”.
Not only a fantastic photographer and businessman, but I can hereby testify that Chase Jarvis is one of the most welcoming, warm, and genuinely awesome people I’ve had the pleasure to meet. Super open the obligatory selfie, and very much up for a quick shoot.
I got my gear, dialed in the settings, found a dark wall, and got to work. Naturally, working with another photographer, I asked Chase what some of his favourite ways to shoot were. He smiled and laughed and said, “Oh no man … this is all you.” Sooooo … with that in mind, I got him working through some positions, and we both had a laugh at my pocketwizards not ALWAYS functioning. … to which Chase’s reply was, “Oh no … that’s NEVER happened to me.” 🙂
It’s always super fun to work with other photographers, and even more fun to photograph them. Chase … thank you brother. A true honour to work with you.
