Carice van Houten
Carice van Houten. She’s done many, MANY things (did you know she’s a KILLER singer?), and has been recognized for her work time and time again. You might recognize her best for the role she plays on Game of Thrones, Melisandre, aka The Red Priestess.
She’s also one of the nicest, friendliest, celebrities I’ve interacted with.
I think I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again, (In my opinion) the truer the talent, the nicer the human. Carice never got antsy about me pointing a camera at her over and over again, and we shared a laugh when I told her, “I’ll make you a deal, I’ll wear the dirndl if you want to wear the lederhosen.”
To this end, she decided to go for it, and donned a woman’s traditional Bavarian outfit, the dirndl, while speaking at Bits and Pretzels in Munich. I complimented her on her choice, and she ever so graciously replied, “Well, when in Rome …”
For this shot, Carice and I were standing backstage awaiting her entrance. Completely unprompted, but something tells me she knew exactly what she was doing, she took one step forward, directly into this shaft of light. Seeing that she was preparing for her talk, there was no way I was going to interrupt her, but what came of it, I think, is a perfect expression of concentration (with a slight dash of nerves).
Shortly after this shot, the moderator asked her if she still got nervous. Her response, “Yes, still to this day.” Her eyes dashed to mine, and I quickly added, “You should be nervous. It means that you care.” She looked, paused, smiled, and said, “You’re absolutely right. Thank you.” … and walked onstage.
A true lady of the theatre.
Enjoy, and if you’d like to work with me, get in touch!
